05-01-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It’s Friday, and the North Central Texas Simplex Net happens tonight at 8:00 PM on 146.580 MHz FM simplex. The Net Control Station is usually based in Weatherford, Texas, but it could be anywhere in the surrounding area. You'll need a good outside antenna to monitor them. If you have a shortwave radio, you can monitor the 7290 Traffic Net on 7.290 MHz, lower sideband, from 10:00 AM - 12 Noon, and again from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Right now, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
--- 5:01 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 11,338 Megawatts.
--- 5:05 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly between 10am and 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. East northeast wind 7 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Tonight: A 10 percent chance of showers before 7pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 46. East northeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening.
--- 5:10 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:15 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:20 AM - Over the last decade, the size of our local CB Radio Channel 6 (the "superbowl") group has shrunk quite a bit. In fact, I've heard just one operator during the last six months. I didn't know any of them, but I know that when the band was dead, and there was no "skip" to be heard, they would engage in "local talking" throughout the day. I don't hear that anymore. Everything changes. The old guys fade away, and no new blood replaces them.
--- 5:25 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 85.5% Kemp: 95.8% Kickapoo: 87.4%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 90.3% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (86.45%) to determine drought stage.
--- 5:40 AM - On CB Radio Channel 19, I hear very faint signals that could be truckers having a conversation as they approach the city. Let's see what develops. At this hour, the band is dead for long-distance (DX) communications. That condition should improve in a few hours. I don't work "DX" on the CB Radio, so I don't care if conditions improve or not. I like it quiet for local communications. It's a skip-shooter's paradise at the top of the 11-year solar cycle, and a local-talker's paradise at the bottom. There's something for everyone.
--- 8:10 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing
--- 10:55 AM - The CB Radio band is wide open, and “147” in Jamaica is holding court. This guy says “I’m gone” a dozen times, but he never leaves.
--- 11:05 AM - I have the Uniden BC365CRS scanner radio searching the military air band from 225 MHz to 380 MHz to see if I can find any additional Sheppard Air Force Base air frequencies to add to my list.
--- 2:00 PM - I had been listening to CB Radio Channel 19, but switched to the Amateur (ham) Radio 20-meter band to check the Parks on the Air® situation. Finding 20 meters quite asleep, I'm back on CB Radio Channel 19 for a while. The military Air Band (200 - 300 MHz) is quite active with Sheppard Air Force Base traffic. You can tune in with a scanner radio like the inexpensive Uniden BC365CRS model.
--- 2:50 PM - Have you noticed a general news blackout regarding the James V. Allred Unit? There are academies, promotions, retirements, awards, officer assaults, and the like, but we never hear about them. A news conference is held if a WFPD officer gets a paper cut. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. I don't know whether this is how TDCJ wants things or whether our local news media ignores Allred. It's a public agency. Go there. Get the news! Tune in to the Allred Unit with your scanner at 153.815 MHz. At least you'll have some idea of what's going on. Better yet, work there for six months, and you'll get a real education!
--- 4:05 PM - Before our downtown Arby’s was upgraded, a visitor to the old one left this online review: Built in the 1800s. Brutal! We got a new building, but I’m glad we kept the iconic sign!
--- 5:30 PM - Wichita Falls Ordinance § 78-1 - Shooting or discharging air rifles and air pistols. It shall be unlawful to shoot or discharge an air rifle or air pistol that, by means of compressed air or compressed gas, is capable of discharging shots, pellets or any solid objects that are potentially dangerous to human safety, in such a manner that the shot, pellet or solid object so discharged travels on, along or across any public street, sidewalk, alley or other public property or on, along or across any private property which is not owned or controlled by the person who discharged such air rifle or air pistol. It shall be a defense to anyone charged under this section with shooting such a gun on private property not owned or controlled by him that he had permission of the person who owns or controls such private property. Public ordinances are "edicts of government" and have no copyright protection. I just thought you'd like to know this in case you have an air rifle.
