04-30-2026 - 6:30 AM - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, the last day of April. The Clay County Amateur Radio Club in Henrietta will conduct their weekly emergency practice net tonight at 8:00 PM on the 146.800 MHz repeater. Tune in with your scanner radio or check in if you’re a licensed Amateur (ham) Radio Operator. As I write this, we have a 50% chance of rain today and tonight. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 6:45 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy, with a high near 65. East wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers, mainly after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 53. East northeast wind 8 to 10 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

--- 6:50 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion

--- 6:55 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion

--- 6:56 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 11,534 Megawatts.

--- 7:00 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 85.5% Kemp: 95.9% Kickapoo: 87.5%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 90.3% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (86.5%) to determine drought stage.

--- 7:40 AM - My James V. Allred Unit (prison) consultant says the four days on and four days off schedule is not what it seems. He says he spends the first day off recovering from work and the last day off dreading the return to work. I remember when the Wichita County Jail was on a five-on, two-off schedule. However, due to staffing issues, you had to work overtime on your first day off and were on call the second day off. In other words, you had no days off, and they wondered why they had a staffing issue.

--- 8:10 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing

--- 2:30 PM - Do you remember when cable TV first came to Wichita Falls? Citizens had to vote on the issue. Both the "For" and "Against" cable TV people were allowed to use the only two theater screens in Sikes Senter Mall to sway voters. I watched at least parts of both presentations. I don't remember what was showing on the "For" screen. All I remember is that on the "Against" screen, they were showing the terrible, sinful things cable would bring to the city, like Richard Pryor and others. They showed a Richard Pryor stand-up routine, and I was sold! What were the "Against" people thinking? On a similar note, it was around 1969 or 1970, and the Wichita Theater on Indiana Ave. was showing a movie that the City must have thought would put cooties on you. I say this because a cop was out in front checking IDs.

--- 6:30 PM - The Local Group is on the air on CB Radio Channel 23. Tune in or join in. They're on just about every evening.

--- 7:15 PM - In 1969 or so, while still in high school, I attended a lecture by rocket scientist Wernher von Braun at what was then Midwestern University here in Wichita Falls. It didn't become Midwestern State University until 1975. I don't remember much about his talk, but I do remember him saying that he didn't know if Texas was a state or a state of mind. At a young age, I didn't know what to think about that. Now, in my old age, I still don't.

--- 8:00 PM - There is a never-ending debate over whether you should buy a new or used car. Some say it is stupid to buy a new car because of the massive depreciation in the early years. Some say the depreciation is justified if you plan to keep the car for more than a few years. I always buy new. I've kept my last three cars an average of 12 years each. I say do whatever makes you happy, but act your wage!

--- 8:30 PM - Several years ago, I removed the vertical element from my 10-40 meter Zero Five ground-plane antenna to adjust its length. That day, I had been monitoring CB Radio Channel 19. When I went inside to get a tool, I heard that well-known truck stop ad booming in. Conditions must have been beyond excellent to get a performance like that from just the 6-inch piece of wire still connected to the matching transformer.
