04-29-2026 - 6:00 AM - Good Morning! It’s Wednesday, and I didn’t learn until late yesterday that Mineral Wells was hit by a tornado. I saw a video of damage at the industrial park, which I’m sure was the location of the old Fort Wolters Army post, where Vietnam-era helicopter pilots trained. Then there was the satellite view of a storm building over our city. Someone commented, “It’s Wichita Falls. You can’t be sure that’s not just meth smoke.” Really? Is that what we’re known for? Very sad. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 7:08 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 11,039 Megawatts.
--- 7:25 AM - It was 1970 when, on a Saturday morning, a small contingent of Hirschi High School R.O.T.C. cadets assembled near the Sheppard A.F.B. Main Gate on Burkburnett Road. The mission: hike to Burkburnett and back to the Sheppard Main Gate. The reward: a teeny weeny ribbon to place on your uniform. A ribbon you had to give back at the end of the year. We hiked to Burk and stopped at the first place we could sit down and enjoy a soft drink. Don't ask about the anti-Burk football team cadence calls on the way out of town. The same anti-Burk football team cadence calls we performed back on Hirschi property. It was totally inappropriate. We were lucky to make it out of Burk alive.

--- 12:43 PM - I contacted a station in White Hill Wildlife Management Area (US-11201) in Utah on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
--- 3:00 PM - There was an episode of Law and Order on TV where a cop was forced to admit, on the witness stand, that he had used the term "homocide" when referring to homicides involving gay men. Many years ago, on the death certificate of a prominent Wichita Falls citizen, the cause of death was shown as a homocide. It was a small but amusing typo. Maybe not amusing to the family. (Grammarly wasn't having the "homocide" thing, but I prevailed!)
--- 5:00 PM - Customer Service: How to tell an owner from an employee - At one time, our bus station was in a metal building on 14th Street between Holliday and Broad Streets. I was there to see someone off when the employee (not the manager) had an announcement to make. Instead of the more professional "May I have your attention," we heard the Wichita Falls version, "Listen Up!" The guy acted like it was a privilege for us mere mortals, to be there. On a similar note, I was in a local pawn shop looking for something when I noticed an employee talking to customers as if it were a privilege for them to be in the store. This person had to be an employee because a business owner wouldn't treat customers that way. Years ago, at a local "drug store/pharmacy," I was looking for "Star Wars M&Ms that were supposed to be coming out. I asked a young female employee about it and was told, "I don't work for M&M, so I don't know. I responded, "The company's name is Mars, and thank you very much. Remember when Payless Cashways was at Seymour Hwy and McNiel? There, I was looking at a lawn mower. I told a young employee that I wanted a particular feature. He told me he would look through the units on display, but wouldn't go back to the storage area to check. Really?
--- 8:00 PM - Living in Wichita Falls, I decided to listen to the "As Falls Wichita, so Falls Wichita Falls." track on the album by the same name. It's been popping up on "X," formerly known as Twitter, for years, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It took me three attempts to get through it. I was underwhelmed. In the interest of disclosure, I'm a mid-range boomer, and I like the 60s and 70s "Top 40" stuff, jazz and blues. Well, I can say I tried to like it.
