05-11-2026 - 5:15 AM - Good Morning! It’s Monday, and clear skies are in the forecast for today. Yesterday, we received some much-needed rain. I don’t know how much, as the “Water Data for Texas” website didn’t update yesterday, or this morning. I’ll check it again later. For me, it’s yard-mowing time, either today or tomorrow. Right now, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

--- 5:50 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 14,225 Megawatts.
--- 6:00 AM - CB Radio Channel 19 is coming alive with local traffic this morning. I heard one peep on Channel 1, which gets regular morning use in Wichita Falls. I haven't made an Amateur (ham) Radio CW (Morse code) contact in a few days. I'll look into that later. The Allred Unit prison is alive and well on 153.815 MHz. The school bus drivers are coming alive on 152.360 MHz. Tune in to those and more with your scanner radio!
--- 11:30 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 85.0% Kemp: 95.0% Kickapoo: 86.6%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 89.6% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.8%) to determine drought stage.:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:+:
05-10-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It’s Sunday, and the Wichita Amateur Radio Society will conduct its weekly informal net tonight at 8:00 PM on the club’s 147.140 MHz repeater. Tune in with your scanner radio, or check in if you're an Amateur (ham) Radio Operator. We have rain in the forecast for today and tonight. Let’s hope we get it without high winds, hail, or those twisty things! My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:30 AM - Over a dozen years ago, the local Sunday night Amateur (ham) Radio net on the 147.140 MHz repeater was canceled at the last minute due to a glitch with the repeater itself. I thought it would be a good idea to call the net on the output frequency of the repeater, since that’s where people were listening. I thought it would be a great way to test everyone's simplex capability. The no-notice aspect of the repeater's loss would have added even more value to the test. I was not, nor am I now, a member of the local club, so I didn’t offer my suggestion. Apparently, no one else thought about it.
--- 5:35 AM - Yet another so-called Elvis fan has posted online that he performed in Wichita Falls on June 19, 1972. How can they be a real fan and not know that Elvis performed in Wichita, Kansas, and not Wichita Falls on that date? And then, there's the one claiming that Pizza Hut was started in Wichita Falls. That, too, had its roots in Wichita, Kansas.

6:55 AM - I don’t participate in “hobby radio” discussion forums, but I do visit them. Sometimes I join for more access. In these forums and on social media platforms, I often see Hobby Radio enthusiasts proclaim their joy and/or skill in constructing antennas, rather than “home-brewing” radios. Of course, it’s antennas. For the average Hobby Radio enthusiast, and I include myself, today’s radios are nothing more than a “black box” on the schematic diagram. You might as well see a microphone (or a Morse code key), an antenna, and a power cord, all attached to a black box. There's no need to see inside the black box, as it’s unserviceable for most who peer inside. That leaves antennas. Decades ago, being called an “appliance operator” was a major insult. Now, most Hobby Radio enthusiasts are just that, appliance operators. I’m an appliance operator, and I feel no shame. Your mileage may vary.

--- 2:15 PM - I wasn’t in the Navy, but in 1977, I visited the carrier USS Coral Sea twice. I was stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco and residing in government housing. A neighbor a few doors down was a Navy man assigned to the Coral Sea, which was homeported at Naval Air Station (NAS) Alameda, a “stone’s throw” from San Francisco. My Navy neighbor had to go to the ship for routine checks on the Engine Order Telegraph, or whatever they were called, and invited me along. I got a pretty good tour of the ship, including the Combat Information Center. One thing I found amusing was the way movies were shown. A projector projected the film onto a small screen, and a video camera, pointed at the screen, sent the movie shipwide. Not long after, it was time for the Dependents Day Cruise. His family had already been on the cruise, so he invited me to this half-day event. We sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge and out to sea. As a side note, I was part of several “gun salutes” (canon) from a pier near the Bridge, for foreign navy ships sailing into the bay.
--- 6:10 PM - The Local Group is on CB Radio Channel 23. We had a couple of minor storms pass through the area today. As I hoped, there were no high winds or hail. At least not for Wichita Falls.
--- 7:55 PM - The CB Club of Central Texas has a net tonight at 8:00 on CB Radio Channel 28. I’ve been tuned in to Channel 28 for over an hour, and it’s packed with “skip shooters” making contacts. In fact, there is a lot of activity across the band. I’ll stay tuned to see if I can hear the net. I have no interest in checking. I’m sure they wouldn’t even hear my low-power signal.
--- 8:10 PM - I think I hear the CB Club of Central Texas Net Control Station on the air, and taking check-ins on CB Radio Channel 28. I can’t confirm 100% that it’s the CB Club of Central Texas. I’ll need to listen a little longer. There’s a massive amount of skip on the channel tonight, so copying is hard.
